摘要: Objective. This study was performed to understand the epidemiology of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) infections in southern New England children. Methods. A retrospective review conducted medical records children 0 18 years old with MRSA isolated by Rhode Island Hospital microbiology laboratory (Providence, RI) between 1997 and 2001. case classified as either health care-associated (HCA-MRSA) or CA-MRSA based on time culture other strict criteria. The spectrum illness HCA-MRSA cases compared, were antibiotic-susceptibility patterns their isolates. Risk factors for acquisition identified, molecular subtyping selected isolates performed. Results. Between 2001, S from 1063 Of these children, 57 had MRSA. During this period, both absolute number proportion due rose more than threefold increases infections. cases, 23 (40%) CA-MRSA. patients likely have skin/soft-tissue (83% vs 38%). including intrafamilial spread, frequent antibiotic exposure, child-care attendance identified 8 (35%) patients. be susceptible non-β-lactam antibiotics All vancomycin susceptible. Conclusions. accounts an increasing all pediatric England. significant percentage are Pediatricians should heightened suspicion presumed infections, especially if they risk acquisition.
