摘要: Abstract Focusing on a seventeenth-century Syrian city, this study examines the practice of slavery as strategy for building elite households in Ottoman Empire. After an overview slave trade and social political conditions which sustained it, it constructs demographic profile slaves slaveholders concludes with case studies how were integrated into selected military-administrative, merchant ulama families. Valued servants, soldiers, companions, business agents, to wide range households, some cases providing critical human resources households’ continuity.
