摘要: One fifth of women in Britain reach the age 45 without having children, yet psychological and developmental theories often begin with assumption that all become mothers. The aim this study is to explore how decade between 55 experienced by who have chosen non-motherhood. Ten voluntarily childfree participated semi-structured interviews, data produced were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Results indicate choice influenced a gravitation towards meaningful areas life other than motherhood, as well rejection its perceived drawbacks. For these participants decision be mainly felt finalized within 30s such biological end fertility not an ending choice. present one gladness about being appreciation freedom it affords, though there some curiosity wistfulness regarding what has been chosen. majority accepted others, but also experiences stigma. Management primarily through creation diverse social circles which childfreedom more ‘norm’. Friendships are viewed important sources support for future, itself anxiety old-age care. Recommendations made professions psychotherapy counselling include ability openly oscillating desires ambivalence believing ‘right’ choice, normalizing childfreedom, helping clients navigate world plan ahead.
