摘要: 1. In Africa the majority of conservation areas sanction some sort human activities within their borders but few them are part community-based schemes. The effectiveness these state-owned, partially protected in conserving mammalian fauna is largely unknown. 2. Large and medium-sized mammal densities three different sorts area were compared to an adjacent national park western Tanzania by driving 2953 km strip transects over a 14-month period. 3. Game Controlled Area that permitted temporary settlement, cattle grazing tourist big game hunting, diversity relatively high. Forest Reserve limited hardwood extraction resident most large species absent. third, Open allowed grazing, firewood collection beekeeping activities, again low ungulates still used seasonally. 4. chief factors responsible for lowered outside Park illegal especially close proximity town, lesser extent, hunting quotas too high. 5. These data suggest state-owned permitting cannot be relied upon as means middle-sized mammals Africa. 6. Two methods being employed ameliorate this problem Africa: excluding people from while upgrading ground protection effort, initiation As yet, however, very quantitative available evaluate efficacy enhancing populations.
