摘要: Claims that there will be a massive loss of species as tropical forests are cleared based on the relationship between habitat area and number species. Few studies calibrate extinction with reduction. Critics raise doubts about this calibration, noting has been extensive clearing eastern North American forest, yet only 4 its approximately 200 bird have gone extinct. We analyze distribution timing extent forest loss. The losses were not concurrent across region. Based maximum losses, our calculations predict fewer extinctions than observed. At most, 28 birds restricted to Only these would at risk even if all cleared. Far from providing comfort those who argue current rapid rate deforestation might cause often claimed, results suggest may worse. In contrast America, small regions hold hundreds endemic
