摘要: Breeding success of the Wedge-tailed Shearwater (Puffinus pacificus) is examined at Heron Island, a small coral cay Great Barrier Reef. The species excavates burrows for breeding in habitat types described as Pisonia forest, Fringe habitat, Southern and Buildings developed western sector. divided into two stages: hatching fledglings produced per chick. Incubation rates (proportion with eggs) are included analysis. Habitat variables likely to influence nest-site selection grouped correlated sets composite variables, using principal components Two models used relate reproductive success. Either burrow occupancy rate or egg density were index selection. showed significantly lower than other habitats. Moisture island substrate had most significant effect on so that birds occupied areas low moisture. Soil strength also when model was eggs laid moisture high soil strength. High associated substrate, nesting birds. Early breeders mortality comparison habitat. primary feather tarsus length fledlings different between It appears shearwaters may have flexible seleciton strategy, influenced by amount outcome differential rainfall intensities probably influences both success.; Submitted fulfillment requirements degree Bachelor Science (Honours), University Queensland, 1994.
