The Prevalence and Characteristics of Emergency Medicine Patient Use of New Media

摘要: Background: Little is known about “new media” use, defined as media content created or consumed on demand an electronic device, by patients in emergency department (ED) settings. The application of this technology has the potential to enhance health care beyond index visit. Objective: objectives are determine prevalence and characteristics ED patients’ use new then define identify transcend barriers improve public’s health. Methods: Face-to-face, cross-sectional surveys Spanish English were given 5,994 who sequentially enrolled from July 12 August 30, 2012. Data collected across a Southern Connecticut system’s 3 high-volume EDs for 24 hours day, 7 days week 6 weeks. part urban academic teaching hospital, community affiliate hospital. Results: A total (89% response rate) reported identical ownership cell phones (85%, P .05) personal records ( <.001). Ownership iPhones compared Android similar (44% vs 45%, <.05). Race ethnicity played significant role texting smartphone ownership, with Hispanics reporting highest rates 79% 56%, respectively, followed black non-Hispanics at 77% 54%, white 65% 42%, respectively Conclusions: There critical mass media. Older persons less comfortable using apps. Income status positive relationship Regardless income, however, smartphones was Latinos non-Latinos.
