摘要: A 28 day survey of all antibiotic prescriptions in a district general hospital included brief interview with the prescriber each prescription. One hundred and nineteen courses were stated, by prescriber, to be for treatment lower respiratory tract infection. By combining prescriber's clinical evidence, laboratory data, radiographic findings, an "index infection" was produced 94 patients. This index reflected features associated bacterial infection suggested that 49% prescribed justifiable, 11% questionable, 40% unjustifiable. The choice usually appropriate diagnosis. Over 80% antibiotics used penicillin group. Ampicillin, single most frequently drug, accounted 60% prescriptions. frequency diagnosis chest increased age. Almost patients over 81 years old who admitted during higher proportion older than younger had low indices
