Vision preservation during retinal inflammation by anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract: cellular and molecular mechanism

摘要: Anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract, a plant-derived antioxidant, has been utilized as popular supplement for ocular health worldwide. However, it is unclear whether this extract any biological effect on visual function, and the mechanism such an completely unknown. In study, we generated mouse model of endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU) that shows retinal inflammation, well uveitis, by injecting lipopolysaccharide. We pretreated mice with anthocyanin-rich analyzed retina. prevented impairment photoreceptor cell measured electroretinogram. At cellular level, found EIU-associated rhodopsin decreased shortening outer segments in cells were suppressed bilberry-extract-treated animals. Moreover, both STAT3 activation, which induces inflammation-related decrease, increase interleukin-6 expression, activates STAT3. addition to its anti-inflammatory effect, ameliorated intracellular elevation reactive oxygen species activated NF-κB, redox-sensitive transcription factor, inflamed Our findings indicate protective function during inflammation.
