摘要: We find that fertility varies by immigrant generation, with significant declines between the first and subsequent generations for groups large population. However, we personal characteristics--such as educational attainment, marital status, income levels--are much more important than generation in understanding outcomes. In fact, are not independently once these characteristics controlled for. maintain declining levels among descendants of Mexican Central American immigrants primarily result higher attainment levels, lower rates marriage, poverty. For example, a four-year increase decreases children ever born (CEB) half child. conclude serves proxy changes other decrease fertility. Neighborhood have some bearing on fertility, but correlations relatively weak. Among their descendants, most consistent predictor at neighborhood level is percentage Hispanic adults. no bear any statistical relationship to current measure emphasizes recent births. This pattern evidence suggests observed relationships based selection into rather influences such.
