Anxiety Disorder amongst Secondary School Children in an Urban City in Nigeria

摘要: Anxiety is a source of concern to the clinicians as it co morbid with other mental disorders, particularly depression and learning disabilities, causes low self-esteem. The aim this research was evaluate prevalence anxiety disorder amongst secondary school children in Port Harcourt. A two-staged stratified sampling method used select schools. Structured questionnaire based on Vanderbilt ADHD Diagnostic Teacher Rating Scale for symptoms evaluating students. questionnaires administered students were filled assistance researchers classroom teachers. Direct verbal interview conducted those noted have any various types disorders fears. Out 885 students, 91 met criteria diagnosis anxiety/ disorder; 10.28%, age range 9-18 years. There 37 males 54 females giving male: female ratio 0.69:1. Majority 52 (57.14%) lived their parents, 28 (30.77%) them family relations 11 (12.09%) working house helps families. reasons given being anxious poor self image, fear death, repeated physical sexual abuses by care givers adults. Learning disability major associated (18.68%). Generalized most common type identified (32.97%). are debilitating chronic conditions. When affects aged contributes significantly academic performance.
