Research Ethics Capacity Building in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Review of NIH Fogarty-Funded Programs 2000-2012

摘要: The last fifteen years have witnessed a significant increase in investment research ethics capacity development throughout the world. We examine nine training programs that are focused on Sub-Saharan Africa and supported by US National Institutes of Health. collected data from grants awards’ documents annual reports supplemented questionnaires completed program directors. Together, these provided long-term to 275 African professionals, strengthened committees 19 countries Africa, created curricula at many institutions bioethics centers within Africa. Trainees’ leadership resulted new national systems policies ethics, human tissue storage export, methods monitoring compliance with guidelines. Training adapted challenges arose due varied trainees’ background knowledge duration time available for training, spoken written English language skills, administrative obstacles, need sustain post-training activities. Our report showcases awareness building/strengthening basic infrastructure Nevertheless, increasing amount complexity health being conducted suggests continued this region.
