摘要: BACKGROUND: Although Torres Strait Islanders (TSIs) are often combined with Aborigines, they a distinct group and would prefer to be considered separately. The Queensland Perinatal Data Collection (QPDC) has been the only population-based, perinatal collection in Australia that distinguished between Aboriginal TSI mothers. It provided unique opportunity compare outcome measures based on birthweight TSI, white populations. TSIs were of particular interest because recent research from overseas suggests groups high rates obesity diabetes, is not valid measure. This concern have proposed as way monitoring neonatal health Indigenous Australians. METHODS: Retrospective analysis 10 years routine data QPDC. RESULTS: had distribution similar whites, but mortality those Aborigines. For birthweights 2500 g 4000 g, 2.5 times higher than for whites (95% CI: 1.3 4.2). CONCLUSIONS: widely used, it necessarily measure all TSIs, maternal conditions such diabetes might cause changes uterine environment produce heavier, healthier babies.
