Position reconstruction from an ensemble of hippocampal place cells: contribution of theta phase coding.

摘要: Previous analysis of the firing individual rat hippocampal place cells has shown that their rate increases when they enter a field and phase relative to ongoing theta oscillation (7-12 Hz) varies systematically as traverses field, phenomenon termed precession. To study contribution phased-coded rate-coded information, we reconstructed animal's position on linear track using spikes recorded simultaneously from 38 neurons. Two previous studies this kind found no evidence information substantially improves reconstruction accuracy. We have is improved provided epochs with large, systematic errors are first excluded. With condition, use both accuracy by >43% compared alone. Furthermore, it becomes possible predict rat's 204-cm very high (error <3 cm).
