摘要: Abstract Purpose Most outcome studies of adolescent smokers have focused on tobacco use in the short term. Few reported health as they reach young adulthood. Methods The design was a 10-year, eight-wave cohort study state-wide community sample 1943 participants Victoria, Australia. Participants were initially aged 14 to 15 years. Tobacco assessed with self-reported frequency and seven-day retrospective diary. Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence used define nicotine dependence A computerized interview assessment during teens Results Former daily adolescence accounted most cases high-dose (10+ cigarettes per day) smoking Other substance abuse psychiatric morbidity adulthood also markedly elevated this group. This clearly evident cannabis dependence, where close two-thirds all formerly smokers. Male more likely continue adults. Persistent symptoms depression anxiety predicted progression did having parent daily. Conclusions poor outcomes provide rationale greater control initiatives directed at early users. Clinical interventions might usefully consider factors such parental smoking.
