The Role of Palliative Care in Burns: A Scoping Review

摘要: Abstract Context Patients with severe burns may face distressing symptoms a high risk of mortality as result their injury. The role palliative care in management remains unclear. Objective To appraise the literature on management. Methods We used scoping review searches 12 databases from inception to August 2019. citation retrieval and retention are reported PRISMA statement. Findings 39 papers comprising 30 primary studies (26 high-income four middle-income countries), reviews, two editorials, guidelines, one expert board document were retained review. Palliative is synonymously comfort end-of-life literature. Comfort mostly initiated when active treatment withheld (early deaths) or withdrawn (late deaths), limiting its overall benefits burn patients, families, health professionals. Futility decisions usually complex challenging, particularly for patients late death category, it unclear if these timely commencement measures. Three pathways identified, but remained how evaluated “good death” supported family which creates need development other evidence-based guidelines. Conclusion applicable management, current confined period, suggesting that not been fully integrated process. Evidence-based guidelines needed support integration delivery patient population.
