Healthcare providers balancing norms and practice: challenges and opportunities in providing contraceptive counselling to young people in Uganda - a qualitative study.

摘要: Background : Pregnancies among young women force girls to compromise education, resulting in low educational attainment with subsequent poverty and vulnerability. A pronounced focus is needed on contraceptive use, pregnancy, unsafe abortion women. Objective This study aims explore healthcare providers’ (HCPs) perceptions practices regarding counselling people. Design We conducted 27 in-depth interviews doctors midwives working seven health facilities central Uganda. Interviews were open-ended allowed the participant speak freely certain topics. used a topic guide cover areas topics of interest focusing post-abortion care (PAC) but also covering counselling. Transcripts transcribed verbatim data analysed using thematic analysis. Results The main theme, HCPs’ ambivalence providing sexually active people based two sub-themes describing challenges counselling: A) HCPs echo societal norms sexual practice people, while at same time our findings B) highlights opportunities from providers pragmatic approach Providers expressed self-identified lack skill, limited resources, inadequate support system successfully provide appropriate services They felt frustrated consultations, especially when meeting seeking PAC. Conclusions Despite existing policies for people’s reproductive Uganda, are not sufficiently equipped adequate Instead, left between negative influence social their address needs those argue that clear policy supported by strategy practical guidelines should be implemented alongside in-service training including value clarification attitude transformation equip able better cater advice.
