摘要: Background The world is undergoing exceptional biodiversity loss. Most conservation efforts target hotspots at large scales. Such approach overlooks small-sized local hotspots, which may be rich in endemic and highly threatened species. We explore the importance of mountain rock pools (gueltas) as Sahara-Sahel. Specifically, we considered how many vertebrates (total endemics) use gueltas, what factors predict species richness, gueltas are most priority for conservation. expected to provide management recommendations, improve conservation, simultaneously contribute with a framework future enhancement communities’ economy. The identification important revaluating global priorities. Methodology/Principal Findings We quantified number vertebrate from each taxonomic group endemics present 69 Mauritania, then compared these surrounding area recorded country. evaluated predictors number’s guelta through multiple regression model. ranked by their taking into account percentage threats guelta. Within mere aggregate extent 43 ha, hold about 32% 78% total taxa analysed respectively. increased primary productivity occurrence permanent water. Droughts human activities threaten while 64% them currently unprotected. Conclusion/Significance Gueltas crucial activities. They require urgent plans Mauritania’s mountains. could refugia under climate change being long-term Sahara-Sahel biodiversity. Given disproportional relation size, they deserving attention.
