Patient and public involvement facilitators: Could they be the key to the NHS quality improvement agenda?

Objective: Research into patient and public involvement (PPI) has not examined in detail facilitators’ (PPIFs) roles activities. This study analysed PPIFs’ using qualitative data gathered from three different UK health-care organizations. Design: Thematic analysis was used to examine cross-sectional collected a mixed-methods approach organizations: mental health trust, community social enterprise an acute hospital trust. set comprised of 27 interviews 48 observations. Findings: Patient facilitators included the leadership management PPI interventions, developing practices influencing quality improvements (QI). They usually occupied middle-management grades but their PPIF role involved working isolation or small teams. reported facilitating development maintenance relationships between patients public, professionals service managers. These sometimes required them use conflict resolution skills considerable emotional labour. Integrating information improvement processes be challenge for these individuals. Conclusions: capture hold that can improvement. However, they work with limited resources support. Health-care organizations need offer more practical support PPIFs efforts improve care quality, particularly making integral QI strategies.
