Disclinations and bumps in nematic liquid crystals

摘要: Disclinations are line singularities often encountered in liquid crystals. The nematic phase indeed owes its name to the appearence of these defects. Here we illustrate by example intuitive idea that a disclination enforced on wall boundary conditions may relax into bump free surface when bounding is removed.
