摘要: Benzene derivatives are important constituents of certain effluents discharged by pulp and paper, petrochemical chemical industries. The anaerobic treatment these waste-waters can be limited due to methanogenic inhibition exerted aromatic compounds. objective this study was evaluate the effect structure on acetoclastic inhibition. toxicity methanogens assayed in serum flasks utilizing granular sludge as inoculum. Among monosubstituted benzenes, chlorobenzene, methoxybenzene benzaldehyde were most toxic with 50% occurring at concentrations 3.4, 4.2 5.2 mm, respectively. In contrast, benzoate least inhibitory: up 57.3 mm non-toxic. general, compounds increased increasing length aliphatic side-chains, number alkyl or chlorine groups. logarithm partition coefficient octanol/water (log P), an indicator hydrophobicity, observed positively correlated results indicate that hydrophobicity is factor contributing high inhibitory
