Optimizing Marigold (Tagetes erecta L.) Petal and Pigment Yield

摘要: African marigold (Tagetes erecta L.) flower pigments can be extracted and used as a natural food additive to color egg yolks orange poultry skin yellow. Five cultivars were examined for their ability grown commercially mechanically harvested. 'E-1236' was consistently top producer three seasons in terms of number, diameter, plant canopy height, stand, fresh flower, dried petal yield. E-1236 produced the greatest quantity lutein, carotenoid pigment, 1998 (22.0 kg ha -1 ), 'Orange Lady' both quantities 1999 (20.7 21.3 , respectively). Transplanted rather than direct-seeded plants two more harvests single season resulting greater amounts lutein production by transplants. In 1998, one mid-season ammonium nitrate application (28 ) resulted larger diameters with but did not affect Plants hedge trimmed mimic mechanical harvesting; this 45 55% reduction harvest data compared hand-harvested flowers.
