摘要: We tested whether territorial defence is adaptive in male collared lizards by examining the extent to which territory owners monopolize females. also females benefit mating with multiple males using alternative tactics when local sex ratios varied. Surprisingly, neither number of offspring that sired, nor mated varied as a consequence highly variable ratios. Moreover, both sired and female mates were independent social status. Courtship frequency was under positive directional sexual selection for success males. None phenotypic traits we examined targets nonterritorial Although survivorship decreased degree mating, multiply similar numbers during all three seasons. Females did not obtain material or genetic benefits balanced apparent survival cost imposed Instead, appeared be ‘making best bad job’, perhaps because abundance hiding places used subordinate makes it difficult avoid harassment. © 2015 The Linnean Society London, Biological Journal Society, 2015, ••, ••‐••.
