How personal experiences feature in women's accounts of use of information for decisions about antenatal diagnostic testing for foetal abnormality

摘要: There has been a striking growth in the availability of health-related information based on personal experience recent years and internet users are often drawn towards other people’s stories about their health. Accounts experiences might convey social emotional that is not otherwise available but little known how it used or implications its use practice. This paper examines people refer to when accounting for decisions antenatal diagnostic testing foetal abnormality. We conducted secondary analysis 37 qualitative interviews undertaken across UK with 36 women nine male partners (eight couples were interviewed together) who talked abnormality 55 pregnancies. When describing decisions, respondents referred examples knowledge gleaned from own individuals’ as well biomedical clinical-epidemiological research (usually probabilities having child affected by health problems probability tests causing miscarriage). Both forms employed accounts illustrate legitimacy internal coherence taken. The demonstrates personally idiosyncratic ways reflect incorporate different types add meaning abstract ideas risk, imagine consequences lives help them make sense they faced.
