摘要: Abstract The recovery of California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) populations is an environmental success story, but it has created new challenges given their interactions with sport fisherman. Economic losses to the Commercial Passenger Fishing Vessel (CPFV) stems both from loss fish, as well costs fuel and time spent traveling fishing areas avoid pinnipeds. Management solutions require a firm understanding public's perceptions issue. To address this shortcoming, we surveyed recreational anglers' lions conducted content analysis media coverage in Southern Californian newspapers. We found that knowledge increased, subjective Marine Mammal Protection Act increased they were less likely advocate use lethal removal manage issues. Avid fishers more consider shooting all acceptable, view controls restrict human activity favorable. Anglers expressed negative sentiments after interaction while punishing favorably, exposing pain Our showed most articles about tourism entertainment majority focused on effects lions. media's framing might obscure successful flame growing management concerns stakeholders like anglers, dock workers, marina occupants. survey among stakeholders, animals regulatory context repellents socially acceptable means managing conflict. Thus, have shown public will enhance efforts. Conservation professionals can influence attitudes by interacting using communications strategies highlight ecological mechanisms behind conflict actions.
