摘要: BACKGROUND Many case reports describing various benign and malignant disease entities diagnosed in cystic parotid gland lesions by fine-needle aspiration (FNA) exist the literature. Very few studies, however, discuss efficacy diagnostic difficulties of FNA cytology such lesions. The authors report a 5-year institutional experience with address accuracy procedure avoidance pitfalls. METHODS A retrospective review 46 cases which patients clinically presented was done from total 221 FNAs performed over period at University Pennsylvania Medical Center. clinical features, cytology, follow-up surgical pathology were reviewed to determine highlight potential pitfalls. RESULTS Based on subsequent excision 29 lesions, rate 83% obtained for FNA. Approximately 20% (9 cases) found be significant tumors included 4 mucoepidermoid 1 adenocarcinoma (NOS), 3 mixed tumors, metastatic melanoma. Three major factors implicated as pitfalls our series: 1) failure obtain critical information, 2) overinterpretation paucicellular specimens, 3) realize that certain generally perceived solid masses can present lesions. CONCLUSIONS FNA is valuable tool primary diagnosis management this significantly improved acquiring detailed history, obtaining an adequate cellular specimen, having knowledge variety frequencies possible may Cancer (Cancer Cytopathol) 2000;90:111–6. © 2000 American Society.
