κ-Carrageenan from marine red algae, Kappaphycus alvarezii – A functional food to prevent colon carcinogenesis

摘要: Abstract Both the insoluble and soluble fibres have health benefits could be used as food additive in pharmaceutical other industries. In current study, role of dietary fibre fractions marine red algae, Kappaphycus alvarezii (κ-carrageenan) against human colon cancer cells, was investigated. It comprises D-galactose 3,6-anhydro-D-galactose, linearly linked by α(1→3) β(1→4) glycosidic linkages. Exposure HCT116, to sulphated (F1 F2) resulted apoptotic cell death, nuclear fragmentation, apoptosome formation, upregulation mRNA expression levels Bcl-2, Bcl-xL caspase3 downregulation XIAP PARP-1. The treatment also enhanced intracellular mitochondrial ROS HCT-116 but not HEK293 L6. apoptosis HCT116 is possibly induced through ROS-mediated pathway combined with caspase3. former induces DNA damage leading G1 cycle arrest apoptosis. Low cytotoxicity anticarcinogenic effects from K. alvarezii on suggests an alternative approach metastatic therapy highlights importance a supplement.
