A reinterpretation of the taxonomy ofDryopithecusfrom Vallès-Penedès, Catalonia (Spain)

摘要: Abstract The aim of this paper is to present a critical review the morphological evidence that has been advanced support recognition two species ofDryopithecus—Dryopithecus laietanusandDryopithecus crusafonti—in collections fossil hominoids from Valles-Penedes basin in northeastern Spain. Based on study details dentition fossils, and comparisons with ranges patterns variation seen extant hominoids, an alternative interpretation taxonomy ofDryopithecusfrom Spain presented. main results analysis can be summarized as follows: (1) there no convincing or metrical more than one ofDryopithecusin Valles-Penedes; (2) all material attributed toD. laietanus(Villalta & Crusafont, 1944); (3) speciesD. crusafontiBegun, 1992 considered insufficiently distinct fromD. laietanus, recognized here junior synonym latter; (4) El Firal mandible Spanish Pyrenees best toDryopithecus fontani.
