Predator Free New Zealand and the ‘War’ on Pests: Is it a just War?

摘要: Conservation policy in New Zealand is centred around an objective to totally eradicate three invasive species; the ship rat (Rattus rattus), brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) and stoat (Mustela erminea), by 2050. The preferred control method achieve this large scale poisoning operations with 1080 similar toxins. This project backed up governmental non-governmental agencies surrounded discourse of ‘war’ ‘invasion’. ‘Big Three’ predators are endowed sinister motives as a means mobilising support. self-described evaluated terms ‘just war’ theory found wanting. In particular there issues recruitment children for killing, humiliation combatants, questionable economic ‘war’, deception government agencies, lack consultation, consideration alternatives, use excessive suffering, unrealistic expectations. An alternative paradigm ‘compassionate conservation’ proposed Zealand. Instead trying get back stable pre-colonial state nature, I propose holistic approach that respects both ecosystems their members takes into account new understandings dynamic processes.
