摘要: An understanding of the historical range variability an ecosystem can improve management and restoration activities, but this depends on spatial temporal scale at which it is measured. We examined extent local-scale variation in vegetation prior to European settlement across a savannah-forest landscape mosaic southeastern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. used phytoliths extracted from soil surface samples calibrate index that differentiates open savannahs closed canopy Douglas-fir forests then shifts with depth seven local sites. tested whether changes aligned known based land survey records mid-1800s, inferred change settlement. The log ratio astrosclereids (phytolith specific Douglas-fir) rondels grasses) accurately distinguished between current types, were sensitive most cores. Some sites have supported savannah for least 2,000 years, while others formerly been filled by forest. However, infilling appears begun different times Our findings demonstrate degree timing differ within broader regional relatively stable.
