摘要: Urban sprawl, driven by population and economic growth, is a pressing issue in the U.S., partly because of its contribution to growing levels vehicle miles traveled (VMT). According government figures, new development gobbling up land at an alarming rate 365 acres per hour (Natural Resources Defense Council 2002). Between 1960 1990, amount developed metro areas more than doubled, while grew less half (National Resource 2001). In response, various efforts mitigate urban sprawl have been are being implemented different contexts with intents under popular umbrella “smart growth.” Transportation plays important role these efforts. investments policies can be used influence patterns, that promote compact help slow growth VMT. This report identifies transportation-related growth-management strategies policy actions smart catalogues them respect goals, characteristics, suitability factors form six matrices, designed as guide for communities Texas selection mitigation techniques appropriate their specific contexts. The matrices were based on extensive review literature expert panel leading use transportation researchers. discusses problem it, describes presents supporting materials, two applications case study form, future research needs.
