摘要: Mature colonies of the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, like most other termite species, produce a reproductive caste in form nymphs that subsequently give rise to alates. Temporal production C. was monitored monthly collections from four field traps New Orleans, LA. Nymphs were present throughout year with peak numbers observed during October/November and May. Large first occurred December peaked March. Fewer than 1.5% workers formed within 3 months after collection removal preexisting nymphs. Collections colonies, kept laboratory for >2 yr, did not any It is speculated nymph induction factor (NIF), possibly coming mature physogastric queen, elicits formation. The same or similar may also be responsible further development their transformation In absence this latter factor, nymphs, except those advanced stage development, are either cannibalized transform into brachypteroid neotenics. A scheme formation various developmental stages each presented.
