This article aims to investigate the effect of sudden changes in external conditions on human mortality levels and age-patterns. Although several studies have analysed shocking events such as famines or deportations, a systematic assessment shock rate increase by age is missing. In case shock, three scenarios may occur: be raised proportionally at all ages, more older younger ages. Two cases natural experiments were analysed: Australian civilian prisoners Japanese camp during Second World War Ukrainian Famine 1933. The death rates war higher imprisonment but slope curve appeared resemble that normal regime. During Famine, contrast, curves different famine years was smaller old resulting slopes. When increases less evidence selection could underlying mechanism appears weak inconclusive. However, other mechanisms lead similar patterns, morality need collected.
