TUNA new, fast anesthesia-free, outpatient device selectively ablating prostatic tissue by delivering low-level radiofrequency power through special 22 French urethral catheter positioned in the prostate via TURS and/or direct fiberoptic vision, outfitted with adjustable needles placed selected area. A pilot study was performed 70 patients evaluate safety feasibility histopathological measurement clinical outcome. Twenty-five were treated prior scheduled retropubic prostatectomy. The surgical specimens recovered from 1 day month after step-sectioned examined histologically. procedure averaged 30 minutes; 4-15 Watts applied 3-5 minutes per lesion. central lesion temperatures above 100 degrees C. temperature 41 C rectal remained unchanged. Macroscopic MRI examination of demonstrated localized lesions averaging 12 x 7 mm 17 10 3 5 treatment, respectively. Microscopic showed sharply delineated extensive coagulative necrosis measuring up 35 15 mm. efficacy evaluated 25 symptomatic TUNA. Tolerance using topical anesthetic intravenous valium excellent.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
