摘要: Abstract Strategic management and planning within estuaries seeks to identify a framework that enshrines sustainability. Within the UK, scoping exercise has been used clarify user requirements define economic benefits could be derived from supporting programme of research. The recognises need for mix fundamental, strategic applied research, address, in particular, issues • long-term change; physical, chemical biological interactions system response (including socio-economic interactions). Achieving such will take advantage research at number different spatial temporal scales. These span global climate change initiatives, through catchment estuary wide studies work on specific features (banks, mudflats, etc.). They necessarily consider changes over time scales seconds aeons. Realistically, management, goal is able predict, with reasonable degree confidence 20–50 year horizon. Given highly non-linear complex adaptive nature systems, absolute predictions may not possible. Rather, it necessary probable/possible outcomes, or states, as basis guiding actions. This, itself, require managers planners move away prescriptive interventionist approach towards more one.
