Communicating strategically in the face of terrorism: The Spanish government's response to the 2004 Madrid bombing attacks

摘要: With the re-emergence of insurgency tied to terrorism, governments need strategically manage their communications. This paper analyzes effect Spanish government’s messaging in face Madrid bombing March 11, 2004: unlike what happened with 9/11 bombings USA and 7/07 London attacks, media did not support framing events. Taking as a strategic action discursive form (Pan & Kosicki, 2003), context attribution theory responsibilities, this research uses “cascading activation” model (Entman, 2003, 2004) explore how contest was generated press. Analysis coverage shows that intended government frame triggered battle among different major newspapers, leading editorials shift over four days prior national elections. contests processes contributes insight into interactions sides (government, parties, media, citizens) help bring about an understanding rebuttal frame. It also helps develop role influence citizens’ frames on content.
