Influences on older women's adherence to a low-fat diet in the Women's Health Initiative.

摘要: OBJECTIVE Most studies of dietary change during aging have focused on maintaining adequate intake by impaired elderly, and little is known about factors affecting for preventive purposes in older individuals. The purpose this exploratory study was to determine the major behavioral influences women's adherence a fat reduction intervention. METHOD A diverse sample 92 women aged 55 80 recruited from two East Coast sites Women's Health Initiative. All were participating modification arm WHI, had received same instruction, maintenance phase classified nutritionists as adherent or nonadherent diet limiting <20% total calories. Focus groups telephone interviews conducted, textual data coded sorted using content analysis techniques within four categories Stimuli-Organismic Factors-Response Repertoire-Consequences (SORC) model. Frequencies responses tabulated compared qualitatively. RESULTS Adherent more likely report assertiveness, lifelong commitment reduced fat, satisfaction with their lifestyle changes, having applicable knowledge skills. Nonadherent reported difficulty resisting negative emotions prior food preferences habits; they also concerned others. CONCLUSIONS Enhancing program will require shifting priorities away conforming social pressure high-fat foods personal moving toward enhancing motivation long-term health.
