摘要: Many traditional cultural landscapes evolved as coupled social-ecological systems. It is important to understand how such systems navigate novel challenges posed by globalization. To address this issue, we bring together two components of a pilot study carried out in landscape from Central Romania. The region was affected major social and economic perturbations the past century, affecting ethnic composition, community cohesion, land property regimes, management common resources. first component our investigated rural inhabitants appreciated ecosystem services through questionnaires with 98 people 30 villages. second aimed assess perception about ongoing changes their communities semistructured interviews 50 5 Rural particularly valued provisioning firewood, water, crops, but also healthy soils. were characterized number issues, especially individualism, lack trust, corruption, poverty. People many initiatives, e.g., NGOs, associations, active individuals, more optimistic regarding future than villages few or no initiatives. A challenge for those Romania find new, meaningful ways keep ecological connected. Otherwise there risk that (short-term) socioeconomic interests may impair services.
