Provincial screening rates for chronic diseases of lifestyle, cancers and HIV in a health-insured population

摘要: Background. Screening for asymptomatic diseases can reduce the burden of morbidity and mortality in all population groups. There is widespread geographical variation quality care. Few data are available on national screening rates South Africa how these vary across provinces. Objective. To examine chronic lifestyle (CDL), HIV cancer a privately insured single insurer nine provinces Africa, to determine whether or not there any differences between provinces. Method. were calculated as proportion eligible members who had received tests during 2011 each province. Mean compared Gauteng other eight provinces. Results. Nationwide 20.5% CDL, 8.2% 31.9% cancer. Despite similar insurance coverage, ranged from 0.3% 0.95% lower with Gauteng. Of provinces, highest annual breast cancer, prostate (p<0.001), while Western Cape rate cervical (p<0.001). Conclusion. much preventive care utilisation within this health-insured population. Provinces more abundant healthcare resources have higher rates. Further research required understand reasons variation, given equal payment access.
