摘要: Abstract Intractable epilepsy is related to various transient and chronic brain electric neurochemical disturbances. There increasing evidence that long-lasting may induce secondary neuronal loss metabolic dysfunction. Still a matter of controversy is, however, whether cognitive avilities patients deteriorate with duration intractable epilepsy. We present results from two independent cross-sectional studies dealing measures global performance in different ways. The first study investigated 78 refractory temporal lobe (TLE) the influence on difference between an estimated measure former or pre-morbid intelligence current test. second aimed at epilepsy-dependent effects IQ 209 TLE. Both showed contributes explanation interindividual variability adult TLE higher degree than age onset. Similar several hippocampal density, volume, glucose metabolism, presented data demonstrate exceeding decades associated worse abilities. Consequently, seems very slow but ongoing deterioration. It assumed epilepsy-related noxious events agents exhaust compensatory capacity functions. A high reserve capacity, might delay onset
