Atmospheric movies acquired at the Mars Science Laboratory landing site: Cloud morphology, frequency and significance to the Gale Crater water cycle and Phoenix mission results

摘要: We report on the first 360 sols (LS 150° to 5°), representing just over half a Martian year, of atmospheric monitoring movies acquired using NavCam imager from Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Rover Curiosity. Such reveal faint clouds that are difficult discern in single images. The data set was divided into two different classifications depending upon orientation and intent observation. Up sol 360, 73 Zenith 79 Supra-Horizon have been time-variable features could be discerned 25 each. MSL is compared similar observations made by Surface Stereo Imager (SSI) onboard Phoenix Lander suggests much drier environment at Gale Crater (4.6°S) during this season than observed Green Valley (68.2°N) as would expected based latitude global water cycle. optical depth variable component seen images with up 0.047 ± 0.009 granularity which averages 3.8°. MCS also observes same period comparable 30 50 km suggest cloud spacing 2.0 3.3 km. Multiple motions visible support presence distinct layers clouds. At Crater, these likely caused waves given regular many decreased towards horizon sunset consistent forming constant elevation. Reanalysis light equatorial dataset may more frequent earlier portion mission previously thought.
