摘要: The closure of all roads links between south and north Workington following the floods November 2009 produced an unusual travel situation. Provision a frequent free train service erection footbridge brought good access both parts town by foot, cycle train, but heavily congested 18 mile detour road. This paper describes findings survey over 400 residents about how they adapted that has affected way now road connections have been restored. Adaptations included changing mode, time destinations. Many respondents report personal hardships, including loss job, health impacts, reduced family visits to relations stress caused extra travelling time. also adaptations organisations authorities such as providing feeder bus services, opening temporary supermarket offering different worksites or changed hours help their employees. The considers severing required services be rethought. discussion questions whether are relevant more predictable changes rising fuel prices climate change mitigation measures.
