摘要: BACKGROUND Alcoholism affects about 10% of men and 3% to 5% women in their lifetime. It is a primary chronic disease with genetic, psychosocial, environmental factors that influence its development manifestations. METHODS A 47-year-old alcoholic male manifested mild nutritional optic atrophy, anemia, pancreatitis, previous gastrojejunostomy pancreaticojejunostomy. After an acute episode hypovolemic blood loss from peptic ulceration, there was increased bi-temporal nerve head pallor permanent vision loss, central scotoma, acquired red-green color defect. RESULTS The systemic effects ethanol abuse--including cardiomyopathy, gastric/duodenal neurologic deficits--are reviewed. Appropriate treatment management ocular manifestations complications alcoholism are discussed. Prophylactic topical therapy may be indicated restore the balance between intraocular tension perfusion attempt prevent further axonal loss. CONCLUSION Alcohol-induced neuropathy should not viewed as isolated entity, but rather potentially treatable problem. An interdisciplinary approach essential optimal patient.
