Some Essential Themes in Building the Case for Captions in Language Learning

摘要: The conference, “Subtitles and Language Learning,” held at the University of Pavia in September 2012, brought together, on one hand, translation researchers professionals and, other those us who have spent years promoting same-language subtitles or “captions” for deaf hard-of-hearing people as a valuable aid to foreign second language learning. It marked not only watershed but also “coming out,” captioning has now spread beyond UK North America, backing European Union (EU) multilingual means supporting its accessibility equality agenda people. We heard about findings large-scale survey (reported detail Chap. 8), which confirmed importance captions viewers, especially migrant workers adult expatriate learners host country’s languages. While recognition by EU that captioned viewing may help bring reality Europe step closer millions citizens, history captioning, particularly outside America UK, is relatively short, nature value users still widely appreciated despite large research literature worldwide. In this chapter, I shall try build unique position TV programmes films between two well-established professional areas: involved translating programmes, specialise teaching using video.
