摘要: Over the 400 million or so years of their co-evolution, plants have evolved some highly effective strategies to combat herbivorous insects. Amongst these natural defence mechanisms are which depend on a primary gene product for effect. These currently suitable producing insect-resistant, transgenic crop by genetic engineering. One such mechanism involves protease inhibitors from cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), anti-metabolic wide range Cowpea trypsin inhibitor (CpTI) genes been cloned and transferred tobacco plants. Those express physiological levels CpTI enhanced resistance insect pests. The insecticidal characteristics compare favourably with those expressing B. thuringiensis endotoxin gene. Some possible advantages of, prospects for, using plant-derived ‘insect-resistance’ in this way discussed.
