摘要: Phylogenetic analysis of melanotaeniid mtDNA cytochrome b and tRNA Pro-control region sequence is broadly consistent with the current taxonomy. However, molecular phylogeny supports elevation M. s. australis to full species status indicates either that it a composite or has introgressed sympatric Melanotaenia species. Phenotypically cryptic diversity in north-eastern Australia possibly represents an undescribed Six major monophyletic clades present were strongly supported by morphological data.
