摘要: BACKGROUND: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common occurrence with reported incidence between 20% 40%. In this prospective observational study, we sought to determine the of PONV in South African population, differentiating black (African) remainder multiethnic population (non-African). We attempted identify individual risk factors for test performance Apfel predictive scoring system our patient population. METHODS: The primary outcome study was nausea, or retching, combination both events within 24 hours surgery. collected 800 patients, 400 Africans non-Africans each group, over 4-month period. RESULTS: There statistically significant difference non-African groups (27% vs 45%, P < 0.0001). Stepwise, backward logistic regression analysis identified female sex (odds ratio [OR], 1.9; 95% confidence interval [Cl], 1.4-2.6), ethnicity (OR, 2.1; CI, 1.5-2.82), motion sickness history 2.6; 1.8-3.7), use postoperative opioids 1.4; 1-1.9) be independent predictors PONV. area under receiver operator curve score 0.62. When modeling ethnicity, sex, resulted 0.67. CONCLUSION: were able as an factor decreasing reason observation remains speculative further investigation warranted. inclusion into systems should explored.
