摘要: Leaf development in C4 plants such as maize involves the differentiation of two photosynthetic cell types [bundle sheath (BS) and mesophyll (M)] to form Kranz-type leaf anatomy. This cellular dimorphism partitions activities so that each enzyme pathway accumulates only appropriate type. We have exploited this property study BS M interactions developing leaves. Our previous studies showed proteins appear concurrently with appearance Kranz To look at earlier events we used three corresponding mRNAs cell-specific markers. followed, situ, accumulation malic (ME), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPCase), ribulose bisphosphate (RuBPCase) leaves both normal mutant argentia (ar) maize. isolated a partial cDNA clone for ME examine mRNA expression. show throughout light-grown seedlings, all accumulate fashion ar The pattern longitudinally along veins, laterally across leaf, locally around individual veins reveals spatial temporal sequence development. before anatomy is evident morphologically. analysis mutant, which delayed relative anatomy, demonstrates first cells develop clusters blade second surrounding any vein are activated asynchronously. discuss our results relation models mechanisms
