摘要: The hypothesis that sexual selection promotes speciation has rarely been tested. We identified 70 evolu- tionarily independent events of feather ornaments in birds. For each focal species we noted the number ornamented and nonornamented belonging to its genus subspecies, as well mating system extent geographic range. purposes comparison, randomly chose a second, for which obtained information on cases was same genus, third, related information. then difference numbers species, or richness, between paired genera. genera regressed found positive relationship. As per rose, rose more rapidly, indicating speciose have higher proportion than less took deviations from this regression, residual them differences richness This relationship with expected were respect their fewer species. Finally, compared species' greater among whose is associated skew male success thus intense selection. Ornamented had subspecies even when controlling range, suggesting an association subspeciation ornaments.
