Perceived Benefits of Complementary and Alternative Medicine: A Whole Systems Research Perspective

摘要: The purpose of this study was to examine the benefits associated with complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments from patients’ perspective using a whole systems research approach as guiding framework. We conducted five focus groups six eight participants each, users CAM recruited through experienced providers clinics. Eligible were aged 21 or older, had used in last 12 months, believed treatment be beneficial. group discussions digitally recorded, transcribed, analyzed qualitative content analysis. Responses inductively coded for common themes, then placed into broader conceptual categories reflecting outcome domains suggested by Verhoef colleagues. Participants described physical health including symptom relief improved function, positive psychological such coping resilience. Social that arose aspects patient-practitioner relationship also reported, support advocacy. In addition, identified empowerment, increased hope spiritual growth results receiving treatments. A new behavioral domain emerged reported use fostered changes exercise, smoking cessation improving their diets. These patient-reported are consistent model proposed colleagues, extend identifying domain—behavioral outcome. findings provide insight direction development process measures evaluate effects.
